Malaysian Content Creator Yipin Says Gambling Endorsement Videos are AI Deepfakes

The Malaysian content creator and TikTok star Yipin has claimed that a series of videos that appear to show her endorsing illegal gambling websites are AI-powered deepfakes.

Yipin has nearly 14,000 followers on TikTok and is also active on other platforms, including Instagram and Facebook.

Her content mainly focuses on food reviews and video reports on consumer goods. She is a resident of Kuching, the capital of the state of Sarawak.

The Malaysian media outlet Seehua Online reported that Yipin filed an official complaint at a local police station. She was accompanied by Wang Debin, the founding president of the International Education Heritage Foundation (IEHF).

Yipin complained that gambling website promoters had ripped her videos and manipulated their contents. The resulting videos appeared to show her promoting illegal online gambling sites.

Yipin said the videos had spread misinformation and caused damage to her reputation. The social media star explained: “I have never taken part in any form of gambling, let alone promoted gambling websites. These videos have severely damaged my reputation and caused me severe psychological harm.”

The IEHF explained that the criminals had downloaded her livestream videos without consent. They then made wholesale edits and used AI technology to create clips where she appeared to endorse a gambling website.

The video was then circulated on various social media, confusing her followers.

The IEHF warned that criminal gangs were increasingly making use of AI and deepfake technology to create bogus advertisements and endorsement videos.

Debin, founding president of the IHEF, warned that fraudsters now have the power to produce vast quantities of misleading videos in a short period.

Debin said that the issue poses a major threat to security and social integrity, and added: “This is no longer just a matter of damaging personal reputation; it’s a crisis of technology abuse that should concern all of society.

“The public must be more discerning and not blindly trust so-called celebrity endorsements online, especially those involving gambling or investment.”

The parties stated that they would urge the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to take action by ordering social media platforms to remove the offending videos.

Debin also asked platform operators to change their policies to “avoid becoming tools of fraud groups.”

The watchdog warned that while technology continues to evolve rapidly, most people’s understanding of how IT works is incomplete. This means they can be easily misled by deepfakes and other scams.

The public was urged to take screenshots of suspected deepfake ads and videos and report them to the police or MCMC. Citizens were also instructed not to click on suspicious-looking URLs to avoid leaking information to criminals.

Malaysian police are continuing a nationwide crackdown on illegal casino websites and underground gambling dens.

In May this year, officers arrested over 120 people in a raid on a Selangor-based multinational gambling ring that staged illegal cockfights and other betting events.
