Malik Beasley Says ‘Decision is Near’ as NBA Confirms League Gambling Probe

The NBA has confirmed that Malik Beasley is under investigation as part of the league’s own probe into suspicious gambling activity involving the player.

Beasley’s Attorney, Steve Haney, claimed the player was not the target of a federal investigation last month. However, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said the league is investigating the player.

“I’ll only say there that the investigation is ongoing,” Silver said. “As I understand it, there’s still a federal investigation that’s ongoing of Malik Beasley as well. We will address whatever is presented to us in his case.”

ESPN said a source “familiar with the matter” has indicated the investigations are in the final stages. There was no indication from Silver as to the possible outcome.

The investigation centers around suspicious betting activity on Beasley’s prop markets when he played for the Milwaukee Bucks. There was reportedly a flurry of bets on Beasley to record fewer than 2.5 rebounds in a game against the Portland Trail Blazers. The player went on to record six rebounds, but a sportsbook flagged the betting activity as suspicious.

Haney has criticized the lack of clarity over his client’s status, commenting: “You live in a state of purgatory with a cloud hanging over your head for what? Forever? And you’re out of the league and can never play basketball again?”

Beasley Suggests Future May be Decided Shortly

Beasley remains a free agent after contract talks with the Detroit Pistons were derailed by the gambling probe. In an Instagram post on Tuesday, he stated that he is not listening to the outside noise and that his future may soon be decided.

The player posted a picture of himself with a comment: “step into my world. where we dont listen to the outside noise where we don’t quit.. where we live to the fullest.. not given af about anything that’s not important to us.. year 10 is approaching.. probably the most interesting one of them all.. and the goal remains the same .. be better than last year

The post ended with a cryptic message: “my decision is near”.

The Detroit Pistons were reportedly set to offer Beasley, who had his best season to date with the team last year, a three-year $42 million contract. That deal is now off the table, and the Pistons can now only offer a maximum of $7.2 million.

The breakdown of negotiations has led to financial struggles for the player. Beasley was evicted from his Detroit apartment in August and is also facing an ongoing lawsuit from his former agency.

The confirmation that the NBA has started its own investigation into the player could further delay any team making a move for Beasley before the season begins next month.
